Description

Our curriculum has undergone considerable change in recent years. We have suspended National Curriculum in Year 7 in favour of a personal learning and thinking skills based curriculum called the Cabot Competency Curriculum (CCC). Students spend 2 days per week engaged in largely project based learning and use the other 3 days for Literacy and Numeracy, ICT, Science and Technology, Euro Time and the Arts.

In Year 8 and 9, students follow the National Curriculum and take their SATS in Year 9. Homework in Years 8 and 9 is being replaced by an Extension programme, where students choose from a range of assignments, a project that they particularly want to study. This is communicated to teachers through the website and marking and feedback to students is returned in the same way.

At the start of Year 9, all students start their first GCSE option from a range of BTEC and GCSE courses. This is then completed at the end of Year 10 when AS courses, additional English and Maths, or vocational programmes are introduced into Year 11.

Our Pathways programme in year 10 and 11 is largely responsible for the raised attainment in KS4. (63% 5 A-C grades in 2004 to 83% in 2007) Students follow a core programme around English, Maths, Science and Technology and then a range of choices through our Personalised Learning Pathways.

In the VI Form, there is genuine cohesion between courses taught in KS4 and the continuity to post-16. AS Critical Thinking is taught in KS4 for able students to give them an experience of post-16 learning styles. Students make a choice from 5 option columns, (with scope for a 5 AS course “fast track”) where we have a balance of traditional academic courses aligned with courses from the BTEC suite as well as applied inspired A Level courses such as Photography and Forensic Science which compliment our specialism. Students may return in Year 14 to complete the Foundation course leading to degree status in Art and Design, that in 2007-8 we took over from the University of West England (UWE).
