Description
Cowplain Community School is a mixed 11-16 comprehensive school serving a wide-ranging community. The School is one of 20 pilot schools that will take part in the DfES project to shorten key stage 3. This scheme will enhance some of the initiatives already embraced by the school.
The project
The project allows opening up of curriculum time to build on what is already being taught within the school. The programme will have four key elements: ‘learning to learn’, social skills, team building and thinking skills. This will allow not only new approaches to teaching through a dedicated team of specialist teachers, trained by me, but more importantly provide new learning experiences for pupils.
What will be abandoned?
The shortening of key stage 3 has meant changes within the timetable structure for years 7 and 8, freeing up curriculum time in year 9. For a block of four lessons per week (each lasting 50 minutes) year 9’s will abandon the traditional subject slots on the timetable and will be engaged in a new exciting learning experience as a whole year group.
What needs to happen next?
The project has a one-year planning stage enabling a successful launch in September 2004. The measure of success will be not only the impact on pupil motivation and engagement, but also the ability to equip learners with skills and ideas to help them change and plan accordingly in a future that is signified by continuous change.

Description
Redbridge serves a large council estate in one of the most deprived areas in the country on the west of Southampton. Students enter Year 7 with very low levels of literacy and numeracy. Currently over 60% of the students are on the SEN Register.
In 2007 64% of the students gained 5+A*-C grades. This represents a 40% improvement over the last few years. Much of our success has resulted from our innovative approach to curriculum development.
“Curriculum innovation at Redbridge is outstanding” Ofsted Survey Inspection 2007
The school successfully raises standards through the provision of increasingly personalised and contextualised learning opportunities.
Three major areas define the nature of our curriculum developments to date:
The ‘Opening Minds’ Curriculum in Year 7 (Personal Learning and Thinking Skills)
Each group is taken by the same teacher for 8 lessons per week.
The ‘Routeways Programme’ in Physical Education
The programme enables students to select their preferred way of learning and then places them in one of four routeways:
Physical Activity: for students who prefer to learn when their own participation and physical well-being is central to the lesson. For example, by having a strong link to their own personal health and fitness.
Movement and Aesthetics: for students who prefer to learn by understanding how their own and others body movements affects performance through analysis and feedback.
Competition and Co-operation: for students who prefer to learn by applying skills and principles in a competitive situation and when they are in roles relating to competition.
Challenge: for students who prefer to learn through problem-solving/team work initiatives.
The Applied Pathways Programme
All students now follow at least one Applied course at KS4 with many choosing considerably more. Students select courses from a choice of pathways without the constraint of option blocks for most of their subjects. Partner providers complement the range of courses available by offering subjects such as bricklaying, painting and decorating, plumbing, car vehicle repair, hair and beauty and retail.
Key Skills, COPE, ASDAN, ABC, NVQ, BTEC, OCR National, NCFE courses have all been introduced.
