Description

Pupils start in Y9 with a traditional curriculum offering the compulsory subjects plus drama. Citizenship, Enterprise and Learning to Learn are delivered in full or half-day events.

Pupils have a free choice of options for Y10 (with minimal guidance eg SAT level 6 needed to opt for triple science). The option pools are then constructed to meet their requests. The options offer a broad range of academic and applied courses, including BTEC. In addition, 20% of Y10 follow applied courses (five lines are available) at the off-site Skills Centre run by the Locality Partnership of three schools and the local College. There is also a range of ‘alternative curriculum’ offerings for very challenging pupils and for SEN pupils. Pupils are guided into these.

In Y11 there is an extensive programme of intervention to support pupils.

Pupils applying to join the sixth form have a free choice, subject to appropriate entry requirements, of the subjects available which include a broad mix of academic and applied. Many students choose a mix of academic and applied. The subject pools are then contructed to meet their requests.

Except in Y9, there is a tailored mix of single and double period teaching to meet the needs of individual courses.

The Skills Centre will be the base for the pilot of the Diploma in Engineering in September 2008
